I haven't read your blog in a while and apparently I have not missed much. This job is really kicking your ass (and depresses me)and every time I talk to you I think you hate it even more. When I move to GA (and we are moving for sure, which you know), we need to get a business plan going.

I wanted to come back to this a moment. At Earth Day Mobile they had a quiz you could take to find out what type of carbon footprint you were leaving here on the planet. Being a family of seven I thought ours would be huge! We took the test and are carbon foot print was less than average. I was really surprised to be honest with you.
Anyway, there was all kinds of info on how to reduce your carbon footprint and the kids were really interested, so maybe I will have me some little recyclers on my hands.
Tator you will have to let me know about the Earth movie.

Very funny. And I wouldn't have expected anything less from Deano. I played in softball leagues for 6 years and I, or my friends do not fit that mold. But, we may have been the only ones. The funny part is these guys (the ones you refer to) take it more serious than church, death or birth. The would puch an umpire over a bad call.

Fall 2003: The Sleep center (my team) was playing The Georgetown Brewery (you know, out on Lott Road) at 6:00 p.m. They were one man short 30 minutes before the game. Good post. I do my part too. The sad part is theres billions (trillions?) in this world who dont...and never will. Theres people who talk about it and dont. Theres companies who have policies about it but dont stand by them. I have been to third world countries where half the city is nothing but junk. Personally, I think we are in a losing battle..but as they say...every little thing counts.

I am intrigued and will see the movie "Earth" this weekend about global warming and the impact it has on the creatures of our world. We not only effect our lives but also the habitat around us. I'm not sure how, or if we ever will solve this problem. The good news is that becoming "green" is more prevelent in casual conversation today than it ever has been.

It's hard to think about what world our kids and grand kids will have to live in one day. It wont just be the stories about "I used to walk 5 miles uphill in snow just to catch the bus" but instead...what is snow?

I watched the video and it's very poignant in getting the message across about pollution/trash that we as a people are responsible for. You get the message in simple terms without rhetoric from either side.

Having five children I know that our footprint is much bigger than the average family with 2.1 kids and its something I do think about. Sadly, I know we don't do enough to reduce the amount of waste we produce or recycle. After reading something about the amount of water bottles that are used each day, I stopped buying bottled water. I then bought reusable water bottles for everyone to use.

I would love it if I never had to see or use one of those damn plastic grocery bags again. I hate them! I avoid using them for small purchases but I have not found a solution for big grocery shopping trips. Very few places use paper these days it seems.

Downtown needs to add more culture. Savannah is far better than NOLA ever wanted to be, and it too is a port city - all while keeping their old buildings and historic landmarks.

As for adding strippers, I worked an event not long ago at the Saenger and when I came out, the girls walking up and down the sidewalk were practically naked with skirts showing their crotches with nothing covering them. Why have strip clubs when you can get all the cat watching for free? just my .02

I think the Crescent movie theater is a good start. A grocery store would be nice. They have a dozen Wal-Marts in Mobile and Baldwin county, but none are located downtown or near downtown. Hopefully, they build affordable downtown housing. The new lofts/condos are very expensive and the cost/sq ft ratio is much lower then a house in west Mobile. The housing that is being offered west of Broad St. and North of Government is geared toward wealthy young professionals (probably white). Right now, Mobile is stuck trying to decide if its downtown is New Orleans or Savannah. Currently, it's somewhere in between and I don't think the mix works. They either add strippers or add more culture.

i know its not popular, but I am in favor getting rid of a third of the buildings downtown and building something other than a mildew trap. Some buildings are historical but many are nothing but old buildings. We will slowly become the next New Orleans.......The city that people from nice places come to trash, puke on, act a fool and then go home to their nice downtown. Lets not become a stepping stone.

It is hard to get everything in one post. My big issue is not really about the guy who lives next to the night club (although he has lived there before there was even a bar on his block....30+ years). The whole idea is what you want downtown to be. A thriving downtown is not a dozen bars and 5 dozen empty buildings. A thriving downtown is not an area that is only generating an economic impact after 9 pm. For downtown to survive and for these bar owners (and future store owners) to survive they need residents. They need traffic throughout the day. I just don't think they see the big picture. Can we get a little creative and open something other than a college bar.
