Draft thoughts! How Ironic.

The ICKEY SHUFFLE....Legendary Enjoy the original....Billy White Shoes Johnson
Just thought I would post a comment concerning the 2008 NFL draft. I was happy to see Auburn place some players in the league, but sad to see that another one of my favorite players failed to get the call. I was not as disappointed as a couple years ago when the greatest college player I ever saw, Junior Rosegreen, was not drafted and cut as a free agent from the Seahawks. I really wanted to see Carl Stewart, Fullback get the nod from someone. This was a guy who excelled in the classroom and was an accomplished concert violinist. I loved his style, even though his feet were a little slow on the cuts.

My point is that in a league, which I love, that has been branded in the past as the No Fun League and has looked down upon player celebration did something really stupid Sunday. We all know that the league has frowned upon the entertaining touchdown celebrations of Chad Johnson, Randy Moss and made T.O out as the worst player to set foot on the field. Remember what a "disgrace" it was that T.O took a Sharpie from his sock and autographed a ball after a touchdown. OH shame on you for that bush-league act. I say let the guys celebrate and use all the props they want. This is a no Bama bashing blog, but I hate when people use the famous Bear Bryant line of "act like you been there before". Why? what is wrong with expressing some joy and entertaining the fans who paid close to a hundo for a ticket. So with that said...........

I watched as "Mr. Irrelevant was drafted yesterday. The stand in commish came to the stage and announced the last pick of the draft. Then they displayed a jersey that had "Mr. Irrelevant" across the name plate and the number 256 or something on the back. ESPN talked about the ridiculous and embarrassing things he will receive for being the last guy drafted. It was so corny and dare I say bush-league. Oh WOW, he gets a pool party and a BBQ. What an embarrassment for this guy. Although we know he will not stick in the league, was this not just a funny entertaining way to end the draft? Now I ask you, why is it wrong to throw an autographed ball in the stands after a touchdown if this kind of entertainment is displayed by the commish himself? Is it worse to entertain the crowd or make the family of a lucky kid embarrassed that their son is "Mr. Irrelevant".

I will always live and breath the NFL, but if you look in Websters for double standard.....You should see an NFL logo. Personally, I hope this years last pick makes a splash in the NFL and uses that ridiculous jersey as a prop in a good old fashioned touchdown celebration.Ickey Woods style!

I totally agree about your "Mr. Irrelevant" point. Hey, this kid has done something 98% of other football athletes have ever done. First, played college football at a high level (regardless of the conference) and secondly, was drafted by an NFL team. Heck, even mighty Alabama didnt have even one go in the draft (only signed as free agaents). To me, being picked, whether first or last, is something to be proud about. Okay, so what if he doesn't make the team. He has that signing bonus, he can always say he was drafted in the NFL and as they always say...."I all ask for is a chance".

However, on the celebration point I have to somewhat disagree. I can see the relationship you are portraying but, to me, it all boils down to becoming a circus. I dont mind the dances, chest bumps or a spike of the ball but when it comes to bringing out a Sharpie, ceering with the cheerleaders or calling on a cell phone it has gone too far. There has to be a line drawn somewhere. There is no point or necessity for this in a TEAM sport. It only draws attention to one player. And, in a nut shell, thats why the people who do these things are always in the spotlight for some stupid tirade, legal trouble or bickering with teammates. Sure, the fan is there to be entertained and its even the entertainment business....but it's all about what happens during a play and on the field of play (not after). If a player wants to standout that much and be "that person" get into acting or join the circus.

Hmm it seems like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I had written and say, I'm thoroughly
enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any helpful hints for newbie blog writers? I'd genuinely appreciate it.
